Last August we launched our website College Admission Secrets Exposed to promote the eBook publication of the same name. Initially and in all honesty, the site was juvenile at best. So in recent months we had a revision of the marketing web site, graphics, ebook covers, and blog content for the site. After months of rework we are pleased to report that the additions and revisions have now been completed with a few minor items still outstanding. Along with our publication updates we additionally made changes to the primary website hosting our eBook, which can now be found at CollegeAdmissionsAssistanceOnline.com

How to Make a Site Map

Webpage site maps are still a great opportunity to provide the web spiders and robots while crawling your site a quick one stop map to identify your page hierarchy. Many sitemaps can be auto generated using basic link checking software like Xenu Link Checker (a program I highly recommend and use often). But all site maps look the same, so this time around I decided to change things up a bit by creating a page I call Resume Writing Tips and Resume Articles, which is directly linked to the index home page.

I did this specifically for ResumeAdvantagePro.com because I wanted more then just a page call site map, and by putting the link text in my footer with the anchor text as "Resume Tips and Resume Articles". It not only allows this page to be associated with the link phrase but it seems to have more relevancy between the page name and the actual content provided. But then again, who knows. I still create and upload a sitemap.xml at least once a month to Google and put it in my root index for the web spiders to locate.

Teacher Resume - New Site Added

I just added a new website titled MyTeacherResume.com. The intent is to use specific niche web sites as part of my marketing strategy for ResumeAdvantagePro.com. Now before anyone see this as an attempt to create a content farm site; our primary attempt is to provide quality content specific to the Teaching industry and Teacher as it pertains to their jobs and career field.

It will take time to build up our content and posts on the Teacher Resume site, but for now we are starting with major teaching career activities such as preschool and kindergarten, elementary, middle school, and high school. We will move into more college categories at some stage but our focus for the site for now is primarily on K-12 grades.

Google Site Performance - Site Page Speed Tool

New Toy! Yea. Google now has as part of their webmaster tools a site performance page loading speed estimator that looks at a random selection of pages on your site and averages the load speed. This provides you a quick and dirty look at any load delays or issues you may on your site. Thanks again Google for a quick and simple tool that is free and highly useful. Yet I must point out that even though I use Google webmasters tools often, this feature was pointed out to me by my friend Leroy and his site http://www.interfacebus.com/ .

The site performance page speed tool, according to Google's webmaster tools, Free Class Notes Online averages 2.8 seconds to load as of the last update on January 26 of this year. This is faster then 53 percent of sites out there. The index or home page averages a load time of 1.7 seconds.

While on my other site, Resume Advantage Pro, the average load time is 2.6 seconds across the entire web site, 56 percent better then other sites, with the home page or index page loading in 2.1 seconds. This is fantastic because this index page is full of resume writing and free career advice articles and tips that are continually updated. I believe part of the good performance numbers comes from using Wordpress as my CMS which is optimized well.

Free Class Notes Online - 2010 Stats

This past year, Free Class Notes Online performed well pulling in 42,853 total visitors from 170 countries, and a total of 104,901 page views for the year. I did switch completely the URL address from ClassNotes123.com over to FreeClassNotesOnline.com in early 2010 which is why my Google Analytics data is missing the first quarter.

I do have the numbers from the previous URL of Class Notes 123. There were 4,323 visitors, January through March of 2010 from the old class notes site. I made the switch because is appeared that the URL was hindering my traffic. I can honestly say I did see an up tick in traffic after the switch but I believe that's from having more keyword combinations in the URL name.

The bulk of my traffic is organic with Google search engine dominating the traffic source at over 77 percent of the total traffic. Yahoo and Bing organic traffic is very low totaling less then 4 percent combined. One could say if I optimize a bit for Yahoo and / or Bing I might see a jump in traffic; something I'll consider throughout this year as I find time. Overall it was a good year for traffic. Now if I can only get the same traffic on my newest site, http://www.resumeadvantagepro.com/ , then I'll be really, really happy! Cheers all. -Brian

How Often Should You Update a Sitemap

Onsite maintenance completed this morning with additional testing performed on the main index site, http://www.resumeadvantagepro.com/ We use Xenu Link checker to look for any onsite or external broken links or invalid URL issues. In running the report we do always find that there is an odd issue with a forbidden request 403 Error, specifically generated from the comment block. Not an issue but makes the report look a bit odd but nothing unusual for us. Per this reporting, no orphan files were reported or internal page errors. Currently we’re showing 417 total internal URL's by MIME type.

Additionally, we're updating the uploaded Google Webmaster sitemap. There is always the question of how many times or how often should you update a sitemap. In our case, we often generate a new .xml site map once or twice a month depending on the level of new content and blog activity we have. This round we submitted 108 pages to be indexed, up 13 sense our last sitemap update.

Important Announcement - Sub-domain Site Maintenance

RE: Resume Advantage Pro's video workshop member's area.
The sub-domain membership site for Resume Advantage Pro will undergo maintenance this Sunday, February 06 between 5am to 7am EST. This may effect streaming video speeds during this time period. However, it is anticipated little disruption will occur during the entire 2 hour block of time. Streaming video speeds may only be slower during random intervals.

No issues will be affected on the primary product pages, the free content blog, support help desk, or any issues with our shopping cart to include the affiliate marketing program area. All of these components are run on different DNS or attached services.

Following months of product development and revising our product distribution channels, moving primarily to online streaming video and PDF resume templates and Microsoft Word files; our focus for Resume Advantage Pro has shifted to marketing and free site content.

In the last 90 days the crawl stats for the Googlebot activity has shown steady growth, revisiting http://www.resumeadvantagepro.com/ more frequently with averages of 20 plus pages crawled daily. Not bad sense we did little to promote the site until early December 2010.

Sufficient Permissions Wordpress Issue Resolved

Today is all about website maintenance for ResumeAdvantagePro.com. After several weeks of onsite search engine optimization work and content building, I'm finally getting back to more social media discussions with Facebook and Twitter. I've been running into an issue with Wordpress that has become rather annoying and this weekend is the time to find a fix for it. There is a issue with the Comment section where I keep getting the message "you do not have sufficient permissions to access this page".

I think I found the fix but need to test it. What I did was update all the plug-ins to their current versions even the plug-ins that are inactive. I also went in and turned off all my plugins and to my surprise I was now able to get past this error message. I'm going to activate each plugin one at a time and see where the issue is. Maybe the plug-in update helped solve this but we'll see.

Resume Writing Site Continues to Grow...

It's been just 10 days sense I updated the .xml sitemap file for Resume Advantage Pro after a major site overhaul. As it stands right now, Google is crawling an average of 8 pages per day, with a high if 32 with no html errors being reported. This past weekend I spent some time recoding a .php script to more accurately display each pages proper meta tag description, specifically the home index page. I have initiated an aggressive SEO linking campaign to start building page rank and the overall site reputation.

I have noticed a few keyword phrases starting to show up on page 1 of Google for a few longtail keywords but until I have a few months of SEO data to compare against I can’t at this stage make any predictions.

Site Maintenance, ShoppingCarts, and Membership Site updates for Resume Advantage Pro

We're back and in full swing. The Seneea Corporation has been challenged like so many in these tough economic times. But with the completely re-release of our successful Resume Writing Video Workshop Program, now completely available online our staff is happy to announce our resurgence in this marketplace.

Resume Advantage Pro or for some of us in the office who are referring to it as the Resume Advantage Professional 2.0 online video software and workbook program is now fully available. This week we've been working on a lot of integration issues so there has been a lot of site maintenance behind the scenes. We switched over to using Wordpress as our primary content management system (CMS) and integrating our sub-domains membership sites to Wishlist Member to handle all the site content security and file protection. We were using AWeber as our email Autoresponder and Clickbank from prior ebook accounts we had setup. But I'll be blunt here. Clickbank is a pain to do any real customization so we decided to switch over to 1ShoppingCart to provide a more robust solution. The best part is 1ShoppingCart integrates very well with Wishlist Member and it also has a good email Autoresponder built in. The 1ShoppingCart autoresponders are not at easy and attractive to use as Aweber, but at this stage it is not that big of an issue.

The major annoying problem was getting Clickbank billing page to show various line items for bundled products and split out a shipping cost. A huge headache with Clickbank! They say they'll accept physical products but it's a hassle so as Resume Advantage Pro and our other sites grow I want more options and it seems 1ShoppingCart will provide this.

There still is some work to be done on the maintenance aspect this weekend, all behind the scenes such as link checking, sitemaps, .xml uploads and more link building but for now we're off to a good start. I'm using Xenu Broken Link Report to check the links, an older program but one I've always been able to count on because the creators made it outstandingly simple (Thanks You Xenu). Beyond this I've been told our gateway is all setup and outside of a few test runs we're off and running.

This blog has been fairly quiet in the past few months, but there are a lot of activities going on behind the scenes. From a 12,000 mile three month business trip around the U.S. to various web site testing and development, I’ve been extremely busy. Although here’s the scoop:

As of today April 1, Seneea is now the Seneea Corporation, a Nevada domestic corporation that I will be conducting business activities under this name; everything from my professional electromagnetics consulting, to web content and product development, etc.

I’m toying around with an idea of a news media site called News-History-Event that will examine historical news pieces and the aftereffect of the news event. Who knows where this will go, but it is also a platform I’m using to crank up my knowledge of WordPress and Twitter. Here are a few stories I added to the site today:

I’m still continuing my efforts with Free Class Notes Online, but let’s be honest here. I love the technology and providing this content to my audience. Although it is a very narrow focus and after two years of effort and well over a thousand hours of development, my return on investment of time is really poor. So, unless there is specific feedback on what people want, my efforts on this site will be limited as I work other efforts.

There’s a lot more going on but that’s a quick summary of the recent highlights. Now that all the business startup activities are behind me I’ll be posting more often on this blog.

Crawl Statistics for Q4 2009

In the last 90 day, with most of the forth quarter of 2009 represented, I just posted my crawl stats from Google’s webmasters tools. It’s showing I currently have 234 indexed pages, with a total of 572 pages submitted. What was nice to see, is last week the spiders re-crawled my entire site as shown in the spike mid January. The good news, the site is growing. Yea for me. I did however have issues with linking to the index page rather then using the web http address which may have caused some indexing and ranking issues but I’ll dive more into that in the near future. Just count that up to another oops issue I’ve made. It does seem I do things often the wrong way first, and then I finally figure them out, but that’s all the learning process, right? But for now, here’s the page crawled per day statistics in the graphic for the site.

Super Bowl 2010 Commercials Online

With Superbowl 2010 almost upon us, that being here in the US, it’s a reminder of a blog entry I made two years ago during the 2008 Super Bowl. While watching the game, I overheard one of the advertisers say that the commercials would be reposted on MySpace. My original post I included below and wow talk about timing. Over the next three hours after making this small post, my blog traffic spiked. So the right content and the right timing is key. Maybe this year I’ll see if I can pop up another post just to see if I can catch peoples attention again; who knows, maybe Twitter will overtake it this time.

Unit of Knowledge Articles Added to Knol

Knol, Google’s publishing forum described as A Unit of Knowledge provides an open source for content generators like me to post articles of just about anything. Over the past few weeks I wrote two articles, one dealing with electrical resistance and the other a Google search engine algorithm theory of mine. Knol also provides user to validate their name, but this is a feature that only is available to US based authors for the moment. I added Google Adsense and Google Analytics data tracking to my Knol profile as well. I’m not sure how much traffic this will generate but who knows; if I can share some ideas on there, why not its fun.

Site Visitor Stats for 08 and 09

I just posted my year end visitor count for both 2008 and 2009 for my site, Free Class Notes Online. Note, the former site classnotes123 was converted over the last half of 2009 which caused a drop in visitors as I had one site going online with the other being pulled down. You can see this in April through June numbers, i.e. flat line growth. I also made as many mistakes as one could but hey, it’s all a learning process, right. Many changes I made throughout the year were putting most of my scripting in .php format so I can easily make updates to my pages. I’m not sure if this helps or hurts me in the search engines; if anyone knows if a .html is more weighted then a .php please let me know.

I also converted over all my pages to XHTML 1.0 during this time and I’m starting to go through the process of indexing many of my supporting graphics pages. I’ll tell you all why in a follow on post; I think I’m onto something here. But for now the numbers are for 2009 I had 24,301 total visitors for the year.

And Along Came Winter - Winterizing the Lawn

Preparing for winter varies depending on where you live, but in much of world this means colder temperatures are near and those outside projects are coming to a close. Yet before the cold sets in, there are a number of winter-prep projects many households will certainly undertake.

Winterizing the lawn. Yep, winterizing the lawn can, and often does require more then tossing down a winterizing fertilizer product (Scotts Winterguard Fertilizer or similar). All depends on the age and condition of your lawn, regional location, and a whole host of other factors. But pre-winterizing can also mean aerating the lawn, over-seeding, and providing the soil with the necessary nutrients. This is also a great time to break up any hard clay soil by adding a significant amount of gypsum (I prefer pelletized gypsum that can be distributed with a fertilizer spreader).

You see, a little extra work on the yard in the late fall will significantly improve the overall health of your lawn come next spring. And a healthier lawn equates to less work year after year.

Typically here’s my routine:

Cut the grass as normal, but side eject or mulch cut it (don’t bag it). You want the nutrients in the grass clippings to decompose over the winter. Aerating the lawn is done with a fairly heavy machine that punches nickel size holes, about two-inches into the soil, ejecting a plug of soil and grass that looks like dog-poop. What this does is allow “air” to get down into the soil and grass roots.

Then, depending on the thickness of your lawn and type of grass, over-seeding the yard can and often is beneficial. If you over-seed the same day or two after you aerate, you can use a fertilizer spreader available at any home center to spread the grass seed. Aerating creates holes, and the grass seed will make its way down into these holes, protecting it from washing off the surface, and provides it a home until it germinates next spring.

As I previously mentioned, gypsum can also be added to yards that have hard clay. The gypsum can be spread in the same manner as over-seeding and in many regions putting both down at the same time is a common practice. Gypsum won’t hurt the new grass seed, but fertilizer especially over fertilizing can.

That is, after over-seeding and adding gypsum (if your soil has high levels of clay), it is not recommended to fertilize for up to 30 to 60 days. If you’ve aerated and over-seeded it can take 30 to 45 days for the holes (plugs) to begin to close up and fill in, but it all depends on how much water the lawn gets during this time period. It is best to water often in the weeks following over-seeding. Then in 30 to 45 days fertilizer with a winterize product. It is not recommended to fertilize with a starter fertilizer at this point, you want the grass to go dormant over the winter. In early spring, adding a starter fertilizer if you over-seeded will add that extra pop to the new grass and significantly add to the overall health of your lawn.

This is another weekend of site work and performance optimization for FreeClassNotesOnline.com I still don’t have a google page rank which I’m totally in the dark about (gurrrr), any suggestions? But on a positive side of things my sites performance is rocking, with an average load time per page of 2.1 seconds, which is faster then 65% of comparable sites out there. Sense October, the site load performance has been rather stable, with a slow spike back in late September.

Traffic Growing after Site Transition

Over the last few months I pulled down my old site that had a lot of bugs in it and fixed many of the underlying issues. In the process I launched a new site with better content and easier to navigate. The new Free Class Notes Online dot com site is starting to grow in traffic sense the transition, but I’m not there yet. I made the final switch mid November 2009, which you can see based on the traffic pattern jump at the end of November on the attached graphic. My traffic sources are primarily from search engines, some 79.48% for this time period of September 1st through December 16th. Direct traffic accounts for only 8.6%, which is primarily from me working on the site. My objective now is to continue to get as much quality content online while also promoting the site. I just ran several site scans and also included all the external links my site points to using the new version of Xenu Link Checker. I have one page on my AM Transmission home work assignment with a missing graphic, and sense I’m on the road I don’t have access to the hard copy so this will have to wait until I get back east to make this correction.

There are also a few redirected links I need to look over, the list is a bit longer then I want so that’s now on my To Do List. The current stats are: 2004 total URLs of which 99.85% are active, 1135 internal URLs of which 552 are text, and 581 are image files, with a few stragglers.

There’s been a lot going on the last few months sense my last consulting project; mostly travel and some well deserved fun. I just finished up the Tony Robbins Date w/ Destiny conference in Scottsdale Arizona earlier this week; which was incredible and very useful in seeing what values and rules drove my actions, and tweaking them to better align with my overall objective, that’s to provide good and useful content to all of you. New Sitemap Added

This weekend I updated the site map for FreeClassNotesOnline. The site index was for 487 pages and I used the XML-Sitemap.com generator. Up to this point I’ve only used this generator to create my .xml sitemap file. But I’m now running into a slight issue; this generator only is free for sites under 500 pages and now that I’m starting to go beyond this page count I’ll need to find another page generator.

Site Redirecting is Working

Success! I’ve been knocking out some site maintenance on FreeClassNotesOnline.com, more specifically the transfer conversion from the old site. I’m now redirecting most if not all the site pages so I anticipate most if not all my traffic numbers will drop off for the old site and jump up in December for the new site. Yahoo! Let’s face it, I’m not the most savvy internet guru; I’m an electromagnetic geek so little “oh yea it freaking worked” happy moments I come across while banging away on the site are major achievements for me. And let’s face it, the more I can get the site operations seamless for my audience (aka all of you reading this), the more time I have to knock relevant content for the site. Site Maintenance Work

I just ran this evening the Xenu link checker for broken links on the site. I had zero orphan files, a good thing; but out of 498 text URLs and 572 image URLs, and accounting for a total of 1287 URLs including external links to, I have 31 not found URLs I need to investigate.

Beyond this, I’m sort of on the fence about the old site. Part of me wants to just redirect the master index page but also part of me wants to create individual linking pages which will not only take time but take quality time away from building the real site, FreeClassNotesOnline. Why It’s Been Quiet?

Hello all. It has been way too quiet on this blog so what’s going on. Over the last six weeks or so I wrapped up a consulting project which is my primary source of income at this stage and simply put, I needed mental break. I totally enjoy the science and engineering I do in my suit-n-tie professional career; but even as a consultant, the Dilbert moments which are often get annoying. Therefore, in early October I popped over to Rome Italy for a few days, and then hopped on the new Carnival Dream ship and did the sixteen day transatlantic cruise back to the United States. I’ll put up a few blog post about the new ship in coming days so stay tune for those posts.

For now, my head is clear and I’m back in force crunching away in finishing up the Free Class Notes Online transition which I’m happy to announce I’m days away from completing. As I make this shift please let me know of any errors you come across, or any feedback. I’m pulling in about 3000 visitors a month now and I enjoy hearing from all of you. Site Migration Statistics

Today, I looked over the site transition data to evaluate how my traffic and page views are migrating to the new site, FreeClassNotesOnline.com Turns out, in just the last two months sense the acquisition was made the data looks great and I’m driving traffic to my new site. I plotted the Visitors and Page View numbers and anticipate the visitors data will converge sometime around November or December this year.

During this transition period, FreeClassNotesOnline.com while bringing over the content from the older site is showing a good grouping of startup stats in the search engines. Currently, Google is showing 175 indexed URLs based on the sitemap submittal, with in increasing page craw rate. With an average of 27 pages crawled per day and a high of 80 per day, the site is getting recognized properly. I suspect this will see a major jump in the months to come as I complete the transition and upload a lot more new content.

Telephone Interview Screening and First Contact

Up to this point I’ve posted a few resume tips of do’s and don’ts. Often times the next step would be the first contact telephone call which is often a prescreening. If your first contact is via email, don’t worry this section will still be valid; emails can often be the process by which a telephone interview is scheduled.

The telephone prescreen is an interview, no matter who you’re talking to (i.e. HR, a hiring manager, or another person at that company). Therefore, it is critical you provide a good first impression. Personally I prefer to use a landline telephone and not a cellular telephone, just so there is no delay or dropped calls. But if you are using a mobile phone, when they call you, ask them for their number just incase anything happens during the call. Be proactive and professional. Have something to write with and paper at the ready. This is not a sit on your couch and chat. If you approach it that way, your casual tone will come through and you won’t get hired.

As for telephone interview tips; again conduct yourself professionally, have it in a quiet place (no dogs barking or kids yelling). I personally like to have a copy of the job description in front of me, my resume, a calendar, and any notes I had written down when applying for the job. If the position has specific requirements, have some sort of reference material about that in front of you too. When asked about a particular topic, don’t open a text book and read a paragraph, rather use these materials as reference points to help you gather your thoughts. Another important aspect to the phone interview is, do not just let them ask you questions, provide good feedback but don’t tell them your life story. Again, keep it professional and expand on topics as they relate to the job.

After your discussion you will often be asked if you have any questions. Yes, should be the only answer you give; you must ask questions. Have at least two, but no more then four or five. Your questions should be simple but relevant to the job. The important note here is to have these questions written down before you start your conversation. If they come up during the discussion before you ask it directly, then just rephrase it, note you already talked about it, and move on to your next question.

Some questions you could ask are: 1) is there a potential of travel with the position, if so what is typically for people in this position? 2) Who typically provides the uniforms, tools, etc for the position (assuming the job requires these items)… In short, what you’re trying to establish here is a dialog between you and the interviewer.

The big ending, I personally love this part. On the telephone and in person I use two closing questions that often stump the interviewer, oddly enough they are the most important and often overlooked. If I’m very interested in the position I often state “ok (name of person), I feel that I have a good understanding of the position requirements and what you are looking for; based on our discussion do you have any concerns with my experience that I would not be able to perform in this position?” I love this type of question because it now places the interviewer in a position to tell you yes you are qualified or no you are not. More importantly, if they have a concern or feel you lack experience in a particular area, this gives you the opportunity to expand on and area of experience you may have not already discussed. In essence, you addressed their concerns and that often goes a long way to moving your name to the top of their list.

The final question I ask is “ok (name here) I am interested, what is the next step?” You want to conclude the interview with a clear understand of the timeline, not we’ll call you. Get a date, a name, a telephone number, etc. If you get the response, “we have a lot of people we are interviewing we’ll call you”.

Great, but ask what their timeline is. If they anticipate calling people back in a week, etc; then ask if you haven’t heard back from them if it would be ok for you to touch base with them in a week just to check. In these times, people are busy so don’t bug them too much. You want to create a relationship, so be professional but also casual and friendly.

The end goal is before you hang up, you want to know what the next step is, and a date / time you can potentially obtain more information. Don’t wait for the employer to get around to you. If they’re unsure about what to tell you the next step is, offer one to them. Say “(name here), I understand you’re probably swamped by all the interviews you are conducting; so if you can get back to me with how we proceed from here, that would be helpful. How about I touch base with you in a few days and we can talk about this then”. This goes a very long way with employers because it shows your resolution skills and a willingness to actively work with them. Until next time, good luck on your searches.

Your Skills vs. Company Image

Question, is it more important to highlight your individual skills and what you can offer or is it more important to focus on who your employer is? This is often a very common problem I come across when interviewing individuals especially in the labor industries.

Employees tend to identify with their company rather then their individual position or skill sets. For example, when asked “what do you do”; I’ve been surprised that many people say they “work for Company X” as their first response. In the employment search, this can be a negative issue when trying to sell yourself.

Remember it this way; you are a commodity, a product, a skill the company is considering acquiring. It is all about how you market yourself, your packaging, your appeal to the customer (in this case, the customer is your next employer).

When writing your resume and during your interviews remember to talk about what “you” did for your previous employer(s), not what past or current your employer does. An easy way to start this transition during an interview is mention your past employer and what they did as it relates to your skill set. If you were an autoworker assembler, briefly tell your interviewer your past company produced XYZ products; then quickly transition into how you contributed on the production of those products.

From a resume approach, keep it direct and to the point. Mention the products you worked on, but make sure you expand on what you did. For example, if you installed auto wiring assemblies; mention “installed wire assemblies on Ford F150 Truck Series”. The next few lines should be exactly what you did and how you contributed. So, “Responsibilities include installing and verifying wire bundles installations, maintaining assembly line wire bundle stock, and supporting quality assurance with product inspections”, as an example.

Here is a little look into how people tend to “read” information. Basically, you’re telling a story on your resume. If you provide the reader with something they can relate to, in this case the company Ford and their line of F150 Trucks which is the end product, you have established a reference point for the items you will be discussing next. Keep this in mind when writing your resume. If you’re putting your experience in bullet form, the first bullet should mention the end product or service you performed in your work. Good Luck.

Resume Writing, Too Long at One Job

There continues to be a lot of news stories of so-called professionals telling everyone how to find and compete for jobs in this economic downturn. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of bad advice out there (some good) but many of these so-called experts seem to all spin the same advice. One could speculate that these experts never actually build a career of their own. So from someone who has actually been in the trenches and has managed through several economic downturns here a little bit of Resume Advice.

First off. If you’re one of those (unlucky) individuals who has actually worked for only one or maybe two companies throughout the last 7 to 10 years or more; this part is for you! Being a professional and someone who has reviews candidates for-hire and conducted many interviews as various companies, I’m never impressed by anyone who has 10 or 20 years of experience in one company and one job. Why. Simply put, in most cases the individual never pushed themselves into new territory, taken on the unknown, and frankly they never leaned more then one way of doing something. This is the cold hard facts! Say you’re an accountant. Each company and/or division will always have some slight differences of doing their own accounting and even dealing with the different customers can also introduce new methods not always gained by sticking with one company.

So how does this fit with your Resume. If you have a lot of time in at one company (say 5 or more years in the same job) you need to segment it out into reasonable blocks of experience. Let’s say you worked for a company for 9 years and all that time your title was Sales Associate. Ok, rather then writing up one description on your resume with this one job, break it into two or three segments. The key here is break-it-up where it makes sense. Let’s say you worked with various clients over the years, use the timeframe you worked with these clients as “individual jobs”, and describe what your role was with each block of time. Granted there will be some overlap, but for example, say from 2001 through 2004 you worked with three clients, tracked sales, etc. On your resume put this down a one job. Then keep the same company name, title, etc on the second entry, let’s say that’s from 2004 through 2006. During this time you took on two more clients. In this section, summarize your previous responsibilities (i.e. they haven’t gone away), and add in with more detail the two new clients and your role with them. The point here is don’t lye or stretch the truth, but do point out your roles as you took on more responsibility.

In the end, you’ll now have a resume with substance, more key words, and more for your potential new employer to evaluate you on. I can’t stress this enough, show how you have grown in your work. Yes sticking with a company for years and years does show loyalty, but it also shows lack of growth. Which can be seen as an unwillingness to change, and in today’s market is not the message you want to be giving off.

Oops Major HTML Coding Blunder

Ok I’m officially embarrassed. At some point in the distant past the page templates I created for the former site which I’m finalizing the transition over to the new site, all html header information shared the same format. Turns out, I somehow wound up with a hybrid page type definition. In short, I coded the site in HTML 4.01 Transitional/EN, but somehow I had the 1.0 version definition that you would find in an XHTML doctype.

Mistake: !doctype html public "-//W3C//DTD HTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"

Should Be: !doctype html public "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"

I have noticed my traffic and page ranking has been rather lower then expected. But as I move over the content to the new site it should fix any of these issues. During this process I’m recoding each page to have all the header information in a .php script so if needed I can modify just a few master files for the entire site. Cheers all.

Internet Explorer 8.0, Annoying Features

A few weeks ago, one of my systems conducted an Explorer version update as part of its Automatic Microsoft Updates. Usually, I don’t spend too much time concerning myself with these updates, but after several reboots it did “upgrade” the Internet Explorer version to 8.0.

So why am I making a blog entry about this; well IE 8.0 is another further attempt by Microsoft trying to catch up to other innovations by adding in their own crap. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll go on record by saying I actually like Microsoft products. The HUGE difference between IE 7.0 and IE 8.0 is the really annoying placement of some new features. I’m accustom to using the drop down arrow in the address bar to pull up past pages, but here where some coder really stuck their nose into a place it doesn’t belong. In IE version 8.0, when you use the drop down arrow in the address bar, all the addresses have now a delete option right justified on each line; which is EXACTLY where your cursor is when you use the drop down arrow! There has been some debate about making the switch, but it was determined for the longevity of the site, it was best to make the switch now for a number of critical reasons. First and foremost I’m going through the current site on ClassNotes123.com, updating and converting all the pages to xhtml. While I’m making this change and correcting a number of coding errors between browsers, the switch will have the least impact now. It just makes sense.

One of the biggest reasons behind the switch is largely impart to the search engines word search and ranking based on the combination of words. Let’s be blunt here, it all comes down to traffic and ranking and this switch, theoretically should improve both my traffic and ranking. Also, all blog entries for the new site (old site just converted over), FreeClassNotesOnline.com will generate from the Seneea Weblog located on Blogger. There are more key reason’s why I’m making this change but I’ll share those in a follow on post. But for now, you will start to see pages on ClassNotes123 showing up on FreeClassNotesOnline.com. This conversion is scheduled to be completed by October 1, 2009. Over the past few weeks we started to explore various online advertising marketing campaigns beyond the Google Adwords Campaign for Seneea.com we are currently running to expand our market reach and diversity our marketing strategies beyond the standard Google resources. We’re currently evaluating such avenues as the Alexa Toolbar, Yahoo Search Marketing, the StumbleUpon Toolbar, and Microsoft Digital Advertising Solutions - Search Advertising.

Currently we have built much of our traffic by simply word-of-mouth and Adword Campaigns. Our Adword Campaigns which are relatively small, typically running one or two ad campaigns per week at a minimum of cost typically generate approximately 1200 ad impressions per day. The overall strategy for the next two weeks is to evaluate which marketing options would best suit our needs and increase our site traffic to new customers, and implementing these strategies on or about the first of July.

As we continue to make updates and revisions to our site, several employment law sections have been updated in recent days to include such topics as employee dress codes, noncompetition agreements, and workers compensation insurance. These and other sections will continually be added and revised, and content development continues throughout our site. In other news, we are currently in the process of revamping the Google Adsense ads and ad placements on our site which was prompted by a few slight format changes implemented by Google’s ads. This however does not affect our sites content; it only slightly affects the visual rendering for some ads on those pages which have not been updated yet.

Something Up In Virginia

Over the last two months, April and May 2007 we noticed an increased number of information requests, to include internal site searches, with Virginia and Virginia Workers Compensation as the topic of interest. More importantly we noticed this trend seemed to resonate from many IP addresses and at various times, implying mulitable users searching this same topic. About one-third of the requests were related to Virginia education institutions but an overwhelming two-thirds of the request were on Workers Compensation, suggesting that maybe something relating to that category has prompted employers in the Virginia market to visit our site. Granted we can not rule out the possibility that some college and/or university class was tasked with an assignment relating to Virginia and Workers Compensation, and that is driving up our traffic count in this area. Yet it was a unique find as we sifted through our demographics data.

May 2007 Traffic Status Reporting Averages

During the month of May 2007 we continued to notice a growing trend of when and at what time the majority of our site visitors seem to hit our site. Given that we are a career resource web site, it is reasonable to assume the majority of our visitors are in the process of a career change or looking for ways to improve their career situation. Our site data seems to support this, with an increase of traffic following any given weekend with the average peek being Tuesdays followed by Wednesday. After some investigating into why we see this ramp up in the early part of the week, it was discovered that many job seekers become encouraged to seek new opportunities following a weekend and the first day back to work, usually being that Monday. In short, their frustration that Monday at their current employer seems to spark some level of employment or career advice action the following day, hence the spike on Tuesdays. We also noticed a ramp up on Fridays with a healthy traffic flow on Saturdays, again tracking career information seeking individual’s trend that may already be in the work place.

We also noticed the bulk of our traffic seems to come in during the evening hours further signifying the demographic of our visitors as employed individuals who are seeking career development information or may be in the process of a career change. A small percentage of individuals appear to hit our site in the morning hours which may signify an unemployed, part time, or second / third shift employee demographic.

Updated Sitemap Robots

After doing some investigating into a low page count rating on Seneea Site Indexes from non Google page search engines we discovered we had a slight error in our Sitemap Robots text file which has sense been corrected. Apparently we had left off the Sitemap: header which apparently caused several search engines to ignore our .xml sitemap files. To better server our visitors we segmented the College and University listings in both alphabetical and now by region. Using the regional and divisional segments established by the U.S. Census Bureau, each state is now represented in one of four regional areas.

The Northeast Region encompasses the New England and Mid Atlantic states. The Midwest Region includes those states in the East North Central and West North Central areas. The South Region encompasses the South Atlantic, East South Central, and West South Central divisions. Rounding out the list, the West Region takes in the Mountain and Pacific region. Please note, prior to June 1984 the Midwest Region was designated as the North Central Region.

As of today, Seneea.com continues to grow and more importantly has begun to stabilize in the search engines results, something we are pleased to see. So with that said, what are the stats?

The Google search engine currently recognizes 264 pages, Ask.com recognizes 25 active pages mostly higher level pages, and the Yahoo Search Site Explore recognizes our top two page-levels. In short, our pages are currently optimized for Google but we are slowly being distributed throughout the rest of the web.

Yet we still have not showed up in the Directory Listings, but the site submittal process through the Dmoz project can take several months to propagate a site thread throughout the directory listings. We’ll keep an eye on this.

Site Maintenance and Broken / Unresponsive Link Report

Over this Memorial Day weekend holiday our office has conducted site wide maintenance while our site traffic was expected to be slow, yet surprisingly we noticed our visits were up throughout the morning. Apparently many of our visitors were also utilizing this time off to work on their careers, so with that in mind we postponed various site maintenance activities.

However, we did run our usual weekly link report and noticed an increasing in timeout reports from various servers, possibility undergoing weekend maintenance too. Hi all, I’m finally back after weeks of travel and pulling resources from a huge amount of contributors. So where do we stand. Well our site development has slowed in recent weeks mostly do to the fact that our people were engaged in a host of various unavoidable activities not to mention a partial relocation from the Florida office to the Boston area. Yep as word has it, it appears our office will be relocating to the Boston Massachusetts area around the August time frame.

This move will put us in more direct contact with many of our contributors throughout the metropolitan area in the Northeast while still maintaining a strong presence in the Pacific Northwest. As of today Tuesday March 29, 2007, the Google Search Engine is recognizing 208 active pages, with more pages being added daily. The DMOZ database was unavailable for the early part of 2007 so it wasn’t until February did we submit our site to the DMOZ project. It is anticipated our site should have a DMOZ listing within the next 30 to 90 days and prorogate throughout the search engine world shortly thereafter.

Blog Title Error on Individual Pages

This one has our people scratching their heads, and mine too! Apparently sense Google released their new Blogger version we’ve had issues with the Seneea.com header title, but only on individual pages, not the main blog page.

For some “odd” reason, the Seneea.com text gets filled in with a similar header bar color, rather then the white text selected. At first we thought Blogger was seeing the title as a link, but even removing the .com segment still does not correct the issue. Needless to say we’re stumped. So off to the news groups we go to see if this is a common problem.

This past weekends maintenance has caused some issues with the AdSense code on a number of pages, mostly in the Employment Law and Education Sections which is currently being addressed. Some advertisement locations are returning the message “You are not authorized to view this page”.

Site Down for Unavoidable Maintenance Issue
